Enrichment is built into the curriculum rather than added on around it, and it is compulsory. This page is the record of what that looks like in practice.

Increasing enrichment beyond the classroom was one of the two areas for development identified at our January 2025 Ofsted inspection. The work below is what we have done since.

Working with the fire service

Working with Humberside Fire & Rescue Service, students have learned to operate firefighting equipment and, more to the point, learned to work as a team under instruction and even under pressure.

Functional skills in real places

They have spent a day at Humberside Airport, checking in, reading timetables and working out costs in the shops — functional skills applied in a real place rather than practised on a worksheet.

In summer 2026 we ran a five-week programme with the charity Run With It at Flemingate Shopping Centre in Beverley, tied directly to our functional skills qualifications. Students met a number of employers there and learned about jobs they had never considered — which matters for young people whose sense of what is open to them has often narrowed a long way.

Sessions ran weekly during the school day, so no student was excluded by transport or by what happens after school. For a young person who has spent months out of education, being somewhere unfamiliar, with unfamiliar adults, and managing it, is often the point of the exercise.

Community football

We have organised community football events and staff from Child Exploitation Team, Family Support Service, and Fire Fighters, came to play football with our students.

Reading and the library bus

The library bus visits us too. Students choose their own books, book them out themselves and are responsible for bringing them back. For a young person who has not willingly picked up a book in a long time, that is not a small thing.

Sport and competition

Sport is a regular part of the week. This inter-school event brought together schools from across the Humber region, building teamwork, communication and respect.

Students also compete away from school. An inter-school bowling event meant an unfamiliar venue, unfamiliar people, and taking part anyway.
